A WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS ACCESS TO MICROBIAL GENETIC RESOURCES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CONVENTION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

Organised by the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) and the Forum of Industrial Microbiologists (FIM)

The workshop will take place on the 30th and 31st August 1996 at:

The Koningshof Kongreshotel, Veldhoven, The Netherlands, immediately following the International Congress for Culture Collections (ICCC8) at the same venue.

The aim of the workshop is to consider the implications of the Convention on Biological Diversity on access to microbial genetic resources, both from the point of view of the microbial resource centres and the user community. Experts from the culture collections, research laboratories, industry, environmental law organisations and policy makers will discuss the issues that arise through the implementation of the Convention. It is anticipated that draft guidelines for access to microbial resources will be developed for wider consultation.

The workshop will be attended by a number of invited experts, together with other interested people/organisations. The numbers will be limited, but the organisers will be glad to receive comments from all interested people/organisations either by post or during the ICCC8 Congress. These will be taken fully into consideration during the workshop and distributed to the workshop participants.

Invited speakers and the programme are being drawn up and details will be distributed early in 1996 through Newsletters and Internet bulletin boards, as well as through the WFCC Web site (http://wdcm.nig.ac.jp/wfcc.html). Further information may be obtained from:
